Matt’s Story

By Matthew Walker 8 September 2026
In August 2018, my life took an unexpected turn while I was working as a lawn care specialist and tree surgeon. A fall from a ladder, caused by an electric shock from an unknown source, left me with multiple fractures in my back and a devastating injury to my spinal cord at L10, resulting in permanent paralysis from the waist down.

After three months at the Stoke Mandeville Spinal Unit, my determination to reclaim my outdoor life and return to my lawn care business was stronger than ever. I was adamant about doing as much physical work as possible, but I knew a standard manual wheelchair would limit my freedom.

Driven by sheer determination, I scoured the internet for an all-terrain wheelchair that would empower me to navigate the outdoors again. That’s when I discovered the Omeo, a cutting-edge device that was not only robust in its all-terrain ability but also aesthetically pleasing—far from the traditional image of disability equipment. I realised that this was the key to regaining my independence.

Funding this and other expensive equipment is incredibly daunting, especially when you are at the start of your disability journey. One avenue for me was that a good friend launched a GoFundMe campaign so I could start fundraising. With the unwavering support of friends and family, I took on a huge challenge by participating in a sponsored Gaelforce open water swim. Donning a wetsuit (a challenge in itself!), I crossed a chilly Irish loch just months after leaving rehab.

The swim was tough, but the support and encouragement surrounding me made it possible. Through unbelievable generosity, I not only secured the funds for the equipment I needed but also raised enough to donate PlayStations and Virtual Reality Headsets to Stoke Mandeville’s new sensory room—enabling me to give back a little to the place that helped me get back on my feet.

In addition to the sponsored swim, a charity related to my work helped me adapt my bathroom, highlighting the various resources available to those of us navigating life-altering injuries. I encourage anyone facing similar challenges to explore local charities that align with their work and personal circumstances.

At the end of the day, the path to obtaining life-changing equipment can be challenging, but don’t lose hope. With the support of family, friends,  charitable organisations and a bit of determination, you can move closer to your goals and rediscover the life you deserve, one step—or roll—at a time.
